Beth & Simon | A relaxed summer wedding at Captains Wood Barn in Essex

If you’ve seen Beth and Simon’s couple shoot in Richmond Park on the blog then you will know how in love these two are ❤️ Russell and I love to document amazing fun weddings but ultimately what matters most is the love and I have never seen two people look at each other the way these two do. Their wedding day was all about their family and friends but it was like the two of them were literally walking on air and they couldn’t take their eyes off each other. Ladies and gents, that’s true love that is.

I feel like I can’t rave enough about these two. They are just the kindest and most gentle people you could ever meet. It was such a joy to see them get married and be there to capture it all! ✨

Beth started the day getting ready with her bridesmaids and family. I love this part of a wedding day - it can be a bit chaotic and this was no exception. There were so many people bustling in and out of the house but there was so much happiness. Everyone was so excited to get to the wedding.

Beth and Simon were wed at United Reformed Church by their friend and it was such a moving ceremony. Just look at the photographs below, everyone was so happy :)

The couple and their guests headed to Captains Wood Barn for the wedding reception and wow - what a venue. Ever since I first saw this place on instagram I’ve been dreaming about photographing a wedding here, you’ll see why! The barn is just so beautiful and the woodlands that surround the barn are just 👌

The drinks reception was held in the woodland and the bridal party travelled there by tractor which was awesome!

Like us, Beth and Simon love coloured smoke grenades. They just make the most epic portraits and once I saw that the bridesmaids all had matching jackets I insisted we go out for some bridesmaid portraits with them. You can see the results below, how badass do those babes look!

After a delicious meal, hilarious speeches and cake cutting (with an epic sword 😏) there was an awesome ceilidh. A ceilidh is my absolute favourite wedding tradition. Everyone should have them! Simon’s family are Scottish and it isn’t a proper ceilidh without all the men wearing kilts 😉

Such an awesome wedding. Guys, shall we do it again? 😎

If you’re planning a relaxed and fun wedding and you’re looking for a photographer and/or wedding film, let us know!

A beautiful Lake District elopement at Blea Tarn

There are so many reasons to elope ✨

Too many couples look back on their wedding day and feel sad that they didn’t spend enough time with the person they had just married. Imagine spending the majority of the day only with the person you love. You can celebrate in any way you choose without worrying about family politics or everyone else having a good time.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good party and I can definitely understand couples choosing to focus on family when planning their wedding but I think it’s a shame that so many regret not focusing enough time on just the two of them. Weddings are about two people in love after all!

Rachael Burton and Jade Maguire put together this epic Lake District elopement styled shoot to show the benefits of choosing to elope. The shoot was held in Blea Tarn, a wonderful lake hidden in the mountains in the Lake District. There are so many amazing spots in the UK to elope and while a ceremony held in a place like this wouldn’t be legal, you could always do the legal bit the day before and have a humanist blessing somewhere like this 😍 you could even bring a handful of your nearest and dearest along to celebrate with you! (Or you could just elope to Scotland where it’s completely legal 😉)

Rachael and Jade wanted a bohemian vibe for the shoot and chose the incredible Capella dress from the Cosmos collection by Rolling in Roses. I absolutely love Rolling in Roses as all their boho dresses are handmade in Yorkshire, they recycle all their offcuts and strive to run their business as sustainably as possible, yay!

Several other local suppliers worked with Rachael and Jade to style this shoot including Little White Attic who provided the beautiful macrame wedding arch (which you can hire directly from them here), stunning flowers by Bizzi Lizzi and hair and make up by Makeup by Leigh and Wedding hair in the Lakes.

Are you tempted to elope with your love? We did just that and we’ve not regretted it for a second 💕

We offer elopement coverage (and shh, don’t tell anyone but it’s our favourite!), take a look at our info page or get in touch for more details :)

Rio & Connor | A spring wedding at Gildings Barn

My first wedding of 2019 was an epic one :)

Rio and Connor booked me years ago and I was so excited to photograph their wedding! Rio is such a sweetheart and her bubbly energy is infectious. You can see from their couple shoot here that all she does is laugh and smile constantly 💕

Rio got ready for the wedding with her best friends at her parent’s house and it was such a lovely start to the day. Rio’s bridesmaids even serenaded her while she had her make-up finished 😉

The couple chose to hold their wedding ceremony at Crawley Baptist Church as the church meant a great deal to their families. Not all church services are personal but this one really was. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house!

The couple’s chosen reception venue was Gildings Barn near Dorking. The barn is in a beautiful spot, surrounded by countryside. As guests arrived they were greeted with Connor’s favourite beers and their friends performing an acoustic set. Gildings Barn is a really versatile wedding venue as there are 3 different barns - one for the meal and dancing and the other two for relaxing and/or drinks! I know this is one of the reasons that Rio and Connor chose Gildings Barn for their wedding as they wanted somewhere that would suit their guests for the entire evening and would also provide enough space in case the weather turned - which of course it did!🌦

Despite the rain, Rio and Connor and their friends and family had such a blast. They drank great beer, ate good food and with so many guests from all over the world, they had a great catch-up too!

In the evening the wedding guests were entertained by the band Vivo (I coincidentally used to work for the same company as the singer in our former lives before weddings!). The band were awesome! Live music at a wedding really gets the energy moving. If you’re getting married and want a packed dance floor - get a band!

After their first dance, Rio’s cousin (a professional parkour athlete!) cleared the space in front of the stage and jumped over Rio, it was awesome! 🤸🏻‍♂️

Congratulations again you beautiful pair!

Sarah & Toby | A fun wedding at the Little Theatre in Bath

Where to even begin with this wedding!

Sarah and Toby are the best kind of people. They are warm, hilarious and just the most fun to be around. I honestly don’t know if I have ever laughed as much photographing a wedding! The couple have a bunch of great friends too and I felt so welcomed throughout the day by everyone, it was really lovely.

Sarah got ready at her childhood home with her best friend, parents and adorable nieces. The two girls were so cute and really mischievous! I absolutely loved Sarah’s choice of wedding car - her and her family love classic minis and they couldn’t resist the opportunity to drive into Bath in two of them (see below!).

The couple chose to get married at the Little Theatre in Bath. I LOVE this venue, Russell and I even looked into getting married here ourselves. Basically couples get married on the stage in front of their friends and family as the “audience” and it’s pretty magical. The theatre is from the 1930s and the decor is almost identical to when it first opened. The lighting in the theatre is dark and atmospheric so we talked beforehand about whether or not they would like me to use flash. I wouldn’t normally use flash during a wedding ceremony unless the venue is super dark and in that case I would always check with the couple first. I explained that by not using flash the images would be slightly grainy but they loved the idea of that as the result would be more in keeping with the vibe of the venue.

The ceremony was really beautiful. Sarah and Toby’s friend made them an incredible 8-bit video to play shortly before they exchanged rings. After the ceremony everyone ate popcorn and drank beer while avoiding the rain outside.

As it was raining, Sarah and Toby hopped into a mini and drove to their reception venue - Bath Function Rooms, while the rest of their guests (and me!) walked to the venue through the streets of Bath. I loved this part of the day as all the guests had funky umbrellas with colourful outfits and we caused quite a stir as we walked among the shoppers and commuters!

The wedding reception was super fun and included lovely (and hilarious!) speeches and a brilliant quiz. Family photographs were a blast too as Sarah and Toby kept jumping in front of each other’s families, it was so funny. The best part for me though was when Sarah, Toby and I went for a little walk while they turned the room around for dancing. We walked past Sainsburys (v entertaining for shoppers!) and went to take zombie portraits by the river (dream couple or what!). On the way to the river we bumped into a group of uni students who were on their way back from the shop with cucumber (?) and prosecco! They shared their prosecco with Sarah and Toby and it was such a laugh :)

We returned to Bath Function Rooms for their first dance to Frightened Rabbit ‘Old, Old Fashioned’ 💛😭 and an evening full of dancing.

This wedding was awesome, Sarah and Toby - you’re the best 🤩

Zuzana & Martin | A beautiful autumn wedding in Newbury

Zuzana and Martin chose to get married at the beautiful Mercure Newbury Elcot Park Hotel in Berkshire. The benefits of getting married in the hotel is that the couple and the guests didn’t need to travel between venues which gave everyone more time to enjoy themselves :)

I met Zuzana and Martin at the wedding of one of my previous couples - Lenka and Alastair (see their wedding here) and I was delighted to be asked to be their photographer too. In fact, you may see Lenka and Alastair photographed below with a lovely new addition!

All morning the girls were worried about the weather as there had been a storm overnight and there was a real threat of rain - they need not have worried though as the sun came out moments before the ceremony. Zuzana and Martin chose to have a first look before their ceremony as they were both feeling pretty nervous about seeing each other for the first time in front of all their loved ones. I had suggested the first look as it worked so well at a previous wedding I photographed in Australia (here) and they were super happy with the idea. The bridesmaids worked hard to ensure that none of the arriving guests could see Zuzana as she walked through the hotel grounds to meet Martin. Their first look was really emotional and beautiful 💛

The ceremony itself was also incredibly moving. Martin has a wonderfully emotive face and he couldn’t hold back the tears as he saw Zuzana walk down the aisle, it was really sweet!

After the ceremony the newlyweds and all the guests spent some time in the gardens playing around with the autumn leaves (ok ok that was mostly just the one four legged guest 😉). I reckon that autumn is my favourite time of year to photograph weddings - although the weather can be unreliable (tbf we’re based in the UK, the weather is unreliable all year round!) but when it plays ball the light is beautiful and I adore the red and golden leaves that litter the ground. These leaves also make excellent eco friendly confetti!!

After this Zuzana and Martin smashed plates in front of the hotel and worked together to clear them up. I’ve seen this tradition a few times and it can be pretty fun! I love the reaction of the guests as they try to clear it up with the help of the cheeky groomsmen 😉

Later on in the day we also had smoke grenades - you only need to take a look around my website briefly to see that I adore these in couple portraits! In this instance I loved the juxtaposition between the traditional Manor House and the bright pink smoke.

All in all, a fantastic autumnal wedding full of love and laughter!

Lydia & Chris | An elegant autumn wedding at Buxted Park Hotel with a Day of the Dead twist!

Way back in 2017 I had the opportunity to assist the lovely Emma at Epic Love Story at this wonderful wedding held at Buxted Park Hotel nr Uckfield in East Sussex. I love working with other photographers and I’d admired Emma’s work for ages so it was great fun to work alongside her for the day :)

Lydia and Chris had planned an elegant wedding day complete with red roses and champagne set against the stunning architecture of Buxted Park. The day wasn’t all about elegance though as they planned an epic surprise for their guests in the evening. During their first dance an Elvis impersonator walked into the ballroom singing - the guests had assumed they were listening to a recording but it was a live performance!

After Elvis had finished his set the couple and their guests were joined by a Day of the Dead dancing group who appeared amongst their guests impersonating them and being very cheeky! The dancers then led the guests down to an awesome Day of the Dead themed party in the beautiful Orangery.

I loved this wedding because it shows that couples can choose to include some wedding traditions but ultimately there are no rule books for weddings - you CAN have an elegant wedding ceremony followed by Elvis and a fun Day of the Dead party, you CAN get married in a beautiful place and add your own style to your day - you can do what you want :)

Buxted Park is a beautiful venue, a little more formal than my couples normally choose but I think this serves as a great example of the fun you can still have in a traditional wedding venue!

Sarah & Paul | A chilled out church wedding in Kent

I absolutely adore second shooting for my lovely friend Clare and I was so delighted when she asked Russell and I to come along and second for her (and shoot video!) at Sarah and Paul’s fun church and marquee wedding in Kent last summer.

Sarah and Paul chose to get married in St Margaret's Church in High Halstow and held their wedding party in a marquee not too far away. These guys planned a pretty fun day and they have an absolutely great bunch of mates! There were endless pranks, games and laughter all day.

This church wedding is a really good example of when photographers are asked not to stand at the front of the church on a wedding day. This can be quite a surprise to a couple on their wedding day so it is always worth checking beforehand. Clare and I found some pretty good angles to shoot from so we were happy but it’s always worth thinking about if you’re planning a church wedding.

Check out Russell’s video below and scroll further down to see the photographs :)

Rebecca & Matthew | Old Thorns Wedding

Bex and Matthew got married at Old Thorns Hotel & Spa last winter :) the hotel is set in some truly beautiful grounds which you can see below 🍂

The day was full of glorious sunshine too which is unusual in November!

After the ceremony we all went up to the top of the golf course to take some epic couple portraits, it’s such a beautiful spot!

Enjoy the photos:

Adrienne & James | An awesome laidback outdoor wedding in Lincolnshire

This summer has been incredible so far and I've been SO lucky to travel (all over the world, Australia counts right?!) to photograph some absolutely wonderful relaxed and happy weddings!

I knew from the moment that I started speaking to Adrienne about her and James' wedding that it would be a dream wedding to photograph. Adrienne and James just wanted to have a bloody good time with all the people they love.

I could talk for hours about wedding traditions. I love it when my couples pick and choose the traditions that actually mean something to them (or abandon them altogether, that's my absolute favourite!) and these guys did just that. They didn't want any posed photographs (but just look below at how BEAUTIFUL they are when I managed to persuade them ;) !), no group photos and definitely no speeches or forced "fun" for their guests.

These guys did everything in a really simple and straightforward way. They hired self-catering barn accommodation for a week (best decision ever), made lots themselves (the seating,  all the signs, the wedding arch, a gladiators game - yes like the TV show - and the bar...James is a genius), brought in food (picnic food and a PIZZA TRUCK), stocked their bar with their favourite ale, played a massive game of Beer Pong and even threw one of their wedding guests in the swimming pool fully clothed!

All of the above made this such an amazing wedding but Adrienne and James know who the star of the show was for me (and my husband Russell who joined me to shoot video, more coming soon!)...their Italian Greyhound Sunny. Oh my days, I love dogs at weddings and Sunny might just be my favourite dog in the world. Have a look below and I'm sure you will agree ♡ Sunny loves these guys a ridiculous amount, it's so cute!

As this wedding was so bloody awesome I asked Adrienne to compile a list of tips for any other couples who would like to plan a relaxed and non-traditional wedding and here they are (thank you Adrienne!):

1- Support small local businesses rather than using well known chains for things. I found that they show more attention to detail and it's an all round more personalised experience. That being said we bought our table flowers from our local Morrisons and arranged them ourselves. Just suss out when and where to be savvy. Do as much as you can yourself (within reason and without stressing yourself out too much).

2- Charity shops! These places are amazing for picking up little things you may need for added decoration. such as cushions or throws. We bought a handful of cut glass bowls for nuts for the bar etc. I also found Etsy was great for finding one off cute little extras such as the macrame and my belt.

3- We decided to have a free bar...all day...if we could change this now we probably would. By the time the hired bar man had gone home it became a free for all, at which point I had to step in a be a party pooper and limit people's drinks to beer only. However the other side to this is that the guests REALLY appreciated it! - "this is the best wedding ever"

4- Help is all around you. Try not to stress too much as friends and family will step in to help. Call upon the expertise of those you know. If you know someone crafty - USE THEM! Our favours were made by the mother of the groom, the cake was made by the sister in-law! Fortune saved.

5- Don't get hung up on tiny details like, is that glass vase central on that tiny table in the corner - no one will notice on the day and it's time you're wasting that you could be spending on other things...like drinking! (this is one of my fave tips!)

6- The venue is obviously super important. Again this is about thinking outside of the box. We found a lovely converted barn, self catering holiday let literally 20 mins from our front door. As this wasn't a registered wedding venue it was super cheap in comparison and this meant we had the entire venue for a whole week, guests didn't have the stress of travelling long distances AND it slept 16 people at NO additional costs. We found a humanist celebrant who gave us a blessing which meant we had total control over everything - the wording, the location and live music!

7 - This is your day and you can plan it exactly how you want. We were legally married in the local registry office a few weeks prior to our 'ceremony'. This was just James, myself and 2 witnesses. We turned up in jeans and it cost £40. It's a little nontraditional but it suited us down to the ground!

In addition - we knew our day was going to be super relaxed and for that reason we decided not to have bridesmaids and groomsmen. All our close friends and family helped out and we didn't have to give them a title or a suit/dress for them to volunteer.

8 - Our day started at 10.30am and guests stayed until midnight in the end. Despite this being a super long day, it still felt like it was over in the blink of an eye. My advice is stand back for 30 mins just to adsorb, take some time with your new husband (or wife) to reflect, this really helped us.

9- Don't over plan, or worry if you're behind on schedule or if you forget about things - we didn't schedule in a cake cutting moment but it ended up happening, simply because the cake was too beautiful to not be the star for 15 mins!

10- Last but not least, DO choose your photographer carefully, after all the photos they take will help you remember your day for the rest of your life. I would recommend Tash and Russell to anyone! Their work is amazing and they're literally the nicest people you'll ever meet. I think Tash should add wedding organiser/planner/project manager to her CV!

I really love the approach that Adrienne and James took to planning their wedding and I hope the tips above are helpful for anyone else who is planning their wedding! I think it is so important to have a wedding that reflects you both as a couple, to not worry too much about traditions or what others may expect from you. Just plan the day the way you want it ♡
